About Me

Dan Pomerantz, Lead Educator at Logical Minds Academy

Dan Pomerantz

I'm a professional teacher and Computer Scientist offering 1-on-1 and small group tutoring for High School, AP, GCSE, and University students. I bring three distinct perspectives to every lesson:

  • Industry Experience (Ex-Microsoft Engineer): Lessons focus on the why of programming and are grounded in practical, real-world examples.
  • Teaching Experience (15+ Years Teaching): I know how to break tricky, abstract concepts down into smaller, manageable bits.
  • Master's Degree in CS (from McGill Mobile Robotics Lab): I have the necessary foundation to quickly adapt to specialized topics.

How I Can Help You

In my experience, there are two major hurdles to both computer science and programming. The first is the topic itself: both are technically challenging. They involve putting many smaller ideas together to build something larger and there's no generic formula that we can always apply.

The second is equally important and foundational for overcoming the first challenge: confidence. In order to solve problems, we need to be confident enough to try things out, knowing that it may take several tries until we get it right.

When working with students, I emphasize the process of learning via experimentation. As we go, you'll gain more and more confidence over time, to the point that you can tackle whatever larger problems come your way.

"Dan explains everything clearly and knows what can be confusing to people just learning the material for the first time."

Courses and Topics

An advantage of 1-on-1 tutoring is you can learn at your own pace and focus on what you want. Lessons can cover all major computer science topics, including languages such as Python, Java, and C#, frameworks such as Node.js and ASP.net, and core concepts such as Object Oriented Programming, Data Structures & Algorithms, and Database Design.

Lessons are highly interactive. Rather than passively watching a video, you'll be engaged with the material at all times, solving exercises that get increasingly more challenging, and with me as a guide to prevent you from getting stuck.

In the first lesson, we'll chat about your goals and any external deadlines, using this to build a plan for the lessons.

Here are a few popular tracks:

High School AP & IB Computer Science

Comprehensive support for AP Computer Science, AP CS Principles, GCSE Computer Science, and IB Computer Science curricula.

  • Variables, Conditionals, Methods, Loops and Other Programming Concepts
  • Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
  • Recursion, Searching, and Sorting Algorithms
  • Free-Response Question Exam Strategies

University Computer Science

Targeted instruction for foundational and intermediate undergraduate computer science coursework.

  • Determining appropriate technologies
  • Anticipating challenges and debugging issues
  • Integration with existing tools and libraries
  • Coding help, including support with LLM tools such as Gemini and ChatGPT

Our Methodology: Understanding not Memorization

Computer Science and Python Code

In programming, especially today, there's very little need for memorization. Two problems are rarely completely identical. However, with a proper understanding of known strategies, you'll be able to adapt solutions from one problem to solve different problems.

This includes using LLMs (e.g. ChatGpt or Gemini). They can be extremely helpful as tools, but in order to take what they give us and adapt it to be precisely what we want, we need some understanding of what the code they're generating is supposed to do.

Whether you're looking for help with coursework or personal projects, our lessons focus on cultivating independent problem-solving skills. You won't just get the answers, rather you'll learn how to debug, architect, and think like an engineer.
